    • wooden rolling pin
    • #1 script liner brush

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. This project took 1/2" of a full sheet horizontally (12” x 8”) of watercolor canvas. Measure the rolling pin around to see if this size will fit. If not, adjust as needed.
    2. Tape all four sides of the watercolor canvas down to a piece of foam board. (The taped area should leave open 7-1/2” from top to bottom and 11-1/2” across, white side up.)
    3. Basecoat the taped area with Light Buttermilk using the 1” foam brush. Dry completely before proceeding.
    4. Apply one piece of tape on the diagonal from top to bottom. Seal it down well with a credit card or thumbnail on both edges. Using a pencil and ruler, measure from one edge of the tape out 1/2” and draw a line. Apply another piece of tape along the penciled line. Do this all across the watercolor canvas, being careful to seal the edges. Apply a light layer of Light Buttermilk to the open area to seal the tape and prevent paint seepage. Let dry.
    5. Instruction #4
    6. When dry, apply two layers of Cinnamon Drop to the stripes. When done, remove the tape pieces.
    7. When dry, use a piece of 600-grit sandpaper to remove edges where the tape was. Tape the pattern into place and trace it on with grey graphite paper. Lift the pattern to make sure the lines are tracing onto the canvas.
    8. Basecoat the apple with Yellow Ochre.
    9. Instruction #7
    10. Thin Cinnamon Drop with water and apply it to the apple. Trace on the dimple with the white graphite paper.
    11. Thin Burnt Sienna and streak on, following the shape of the apple. Do the same with Yellow Ochre, Georgia Clay, and finally, Light Buttermilk. Use a 1/2” angle shader brush and Cinnamon Drop to float the inside of the dimple. Using a 5/8” angle shader brush, shade the outer edges of the apple all around with the same color, walking the color in a little.
    12. Instruction #9
    13. Float shade the outer edges of the apple again with Cinnamon Drop and a touch of Antique Maroon. When dry, the next layer will be a little more Antique Maroon with less Cinnamon Drop.
    14. Add a little more shading to the dimple inside with the smaller brush and Antique Maroon.
    15. Highlight the top of the apple dimple with floated Yellow Ochre, then with Yellow Ochre and Light Buttermilk, and then with Bright Yellow, walking the color down each time. (Each apple will turn out differently.) Basecoat the apple stem with Cocoa.
    16. Instruction #12
    17. Shade the apple with Burnt Umber and the 3/8” angle shader brush on one side only.
    18. Use the rake brush to pull streaks of Light Buttermilk following the shape of the branch. Add some heavier lines of Light Buttermilk using the 10/0 liner brush and thinned color.
    19. Add vines around the stem with thinned Burnt Umber.
    20. To highlight, mix Snow White and water. Using a #4 liner brush, wet the entire apple with clean water and, while it is still wet, drop a little of the Snow White wash onto it where you want the highlight. (You CAN put the highlight anywhere. Watch it to make sure it doesn’t travel too far.) When dry, do it again until you like the brightness of the highlight.
    21. Basecoat the leaf with Hauser Medium Green.
    22. Instruction #17
    23. Dry-brush 3/4 of the center of the leaf with Soft Sage.
    24. Apply a highlight to the tip of the leaf with floated Margarita. Shade at the base, about 3/4 of the way down both sides of the leaf and down the center vein, with Hauser Dark Green.
    25. Highlight the opposite side of the center vein with floated Margarita and then Snow White. (Make sure these are very well-blended colors; use a mop brush, if necessary.)
    26. Instruction #20
    27. Add some soft floated tints of Antique Maroon plus Cinnamon Drop to the leaf. Use a #1 script liner brush and thinned Midnite Green to add the veins and outline the leaf.
    28. To finish the leaf, make a wash of Bright Yellow and apply it to the leaf.
    29. Instruction #22
    30. Basecoat the ribbon Sapphire. Basecoat the areas marked "WB" on the pattern with Winter Blue. (The stars will be added later.)
    31. Instruction #23
    32. With floated Deep Midnight Blue, shade the Sapphire Blue down the side that does not have Winter Blue on it. Highlight the other side, next to the Winter Blue, with floated Blue Chiffon. Shade the inside of the Winter Blue with floated Sapphire and a touch of Deep Midnight Blue. The highlights are Snow White on Winter Blue.
    33. Instruction #24
    34. Outline the dark areas of the Winter Blue areas with thinned Deep Midnight Blue. Outline right next to it, on the highlighted Sapphire, with thinned Snow White. (These two lining colors will be back-to-back.)
    35. Instruction #25
    36. When everything is dry, attach the little sticker stars where you want them, and cut the excess with the Xacto® knife where they hang over something.
    37. While the canvas is attached to the foam board, apply a layer of DuraClear Satin Varnish.
    38. Paint "thread" on the buttons with Sapphire.
    39. When dry, glue the buttons to the middle of the bows.
    40. When dry, add StarLite Glittering TopCoat.Repeat steps 23-30 for other bow.
