Chippy Finish Rocking Chair

Chippy Finish Rocking Chair

I absolutely love painting furnishings for children because it gives me an excuse to go crazy with color, otherwise I usually gravitate toward neutrals.  Kid's furniture can always be bright, fun & whimsical... In fact, usually the brighter the color, the more little ones will love it!  I've been crazy about the color coral lately, so when I picked up this tiny vintage rocking chair from a local yard sale, I knew exactly what I wanted to do!

Items Needed:

  • Paint Brush
  • Sand Paper

Instructions:

First, I cleaned my chair with a bit of warm water, just to remove and dust build up from the years.

Next, I applied two coats of Smitten, waiting an hour between coats.  You'll notice from the before photo that someone already tried painting this chair white before me!  The great part about chalky finish paint is that it will adhere to just about any surface, even one that's already been finished with a different type of paint!

While I waited for the Smitten to dry, I painted the chair's spindles in two coats of Delicate.  I absolutely love this color because it's reads like an aged antique cream, especially after you've distressed it lightly.

Once the paint was dry, I used fine grit sand paper to lightly distress areas on the chair that would appear to age naturally, like edges, corners, and back spindles.  This gave the chair a naturally aged, chippy look.

Finally, using a clean cloth (pill-free!), I applied one coat of Americana's Soft Light Satin Varnish to seal the finish!
