5 Frugal Ways to Makeover a Room

5 Frugal Ways to Makeover a Room

Everyone has that room…you know, that room in your house that is less than appealing. The one where you close the door when guests come over. So I’ve put together a few easy & inexpensive ways to makeover that room without breaking the bank.

  1. Paint – when updating a space, paint is possibly one of the easiest ways to change the look of your room. A fresh coat of paint does wonders to freshen walls and perk up your room. Already like your wall color? Why not make a fabulous accent wall in a bold hue? You’ll get a great pop without going overboard on the color. Check out this amazing yellow accent wall from The Decorologist along with some other tips on mastering the accent wall.

  2. Linens – sometimes it’s easy to forget about how important linens are to a room. We all know they have a purpose, whether it’s towels, pillows or sheets, but aside from just being utilitarian, they play an integral part in the appeal of a room. When was the last time you got new towels, or a new duvet? Or how about making your own? Check out this gorgeous Duvet from The Sewing Rabbit.

  3. Furniture – maybe your room is missing a piece of great furniture or maybe there are too many pieces in there? Either way, you don’t have to spend a lot to get some wonderful pieces for your room. Consider painting or refinishing those old or out of date pieces to create an updated look. Chalk paint is an easy and affordable to breathe new life into those less-than gorgeous pieces. See what can be done with some ideas from DecoArt's Chalky Finish project gallery. Or maybe move some pieces around your house to create more space and flow in your updated room. Looking for a perfect piece to add to your room? Scope out your local used furniture stores and garage sales for items with great ‘bones’ that just simply need a little refreshing. (DecoArt’s Chalky Finish Paints work great for thrift store finds!)

  4. Accessories – your décor item and accessories can make or break your room. Too many things and you’ll put out that hoarder vibe. Not enough and you’ll look like you still haven’t unpacked from when you moved in three years ago. Try moving out some of your accessories to help get a calming effect in your space. Or maybe give them new life with a coat of paint. Yes, chalk paint is perfect for this, but what about painting those lampshades with fabric paint or maybe give that vase a makeover with some glass paints? Look at these fantastic home decor ideas. It doesn’t take a lot of money to get a fabulous new look, just some creativity and a few great products.

  5. Artwork – last but not certainly not least is Art! Bare walls can be a bold statement, but more often than not they just make a room look unfinished. The best part is you don’t have to be rich to have great works of art hanging in your home. Why not pick up a cool old painting from an antique store? It may not be worth millions, but if you love it, then that’s all that matters. Maybe you have a great picture in the basement, but the frame is ugly and outdated. Don’t spend lots of money on reframing it, try painting the frame instead. Or even better, how about creating your own work of art? Canvasses are affordable and easily found at your local art supply store. Just grab a few colors and a paint brush or two and let your creative juices flow. Stuck for inspiration?
