Stamps by mixed media artist Andy Skinner add meaning to the mixed media cover of an art journal.

SUPPLIES

    INSTRUCTIONS

    NOTES:

    Let dry completely between painting steps.

    1. Separate the pages of the art journal and keep the rings, if you choose to use them.
    2. Instruction #1
    3. Use a #6 flat brush to mix (5) parts Green Gold, (2) parts Medium Grey Value 6, (1) part Titanium White, and a small amount of Cobalt Turquoise Hue. Use the mix to paint the front of the journal. Rinse brush.

    5. Use a pen or pencil and the tracing and transfer papers to trace and transfer the pattern onto the front of the journal.

    7. Use a #1 round brush to outline the hand in Titanium White. Rinse brush.

    9. Use the #1 round brush and Hansa Yellow Medium with a small amount of Titanium White to basecoat the fish. Let dry. Use the same brush to paint just Hansa Yellow Medium. Use the same brush to shade with Diarylide Yellow. Shade last with Cadmium Orange Hue. Rinse brush.

    11. Use the #1 round brush to add Gold (Interference) to the fish. Rinse brush.

    13. Use the #1 round brush to mix (2) parts Titanium White with (1) part Cobalt Teal Hue. Use the mix with the same brush to paint the background of one fish. Rinse brush. Use the same brush to mix (2) parts Titanium White with (1) part Dioxazine Purple. Use this mix with the same brush to paint behind the second fish. Save mix for later step. Rinse brush.

    15. Use the #1 liner brush and Transparent Red Iron Oxide to fill in the middle finger, omitting the pattern. Rinse brush.

    17. Use the #1 round brush and Cobalt Turquoise Hue to paint the palm of the hand around the circle pattern, omitting the pinkie and thumb. Rinse brush. Use the #1 liner brush and Cobalt Turquoise Hue to paint the swirls in the background of the fish. Rinse brush.

    19. Use the #1 liner brush and Dioxazine Purple to paint the swirls in the Dioxazine Purple/Titanium White background of the fish painted in Step 7.

    21. Use the #1 liner brush to mix (1) part Hansa Yellow Medium with a small amount of Titanium White. Use mix to paint the moon. Rinse brush. Use the same brush to mix (1) part Hansa Yellow Medium, (1) part Green Gold, and a small amount of Titanium White to paint the leaves and stem. Rinse brush. Use the same brush to paint the star with Diarylide Yellow. Rinse brush.

    23. Use the #1 liner brush to mix Cobalt Teal Hue and a small amount of Titanium White. Use the mix to paint designs on the middle finger. Rinse brush. Use the same brush with Cobalt Turquoise Hue to outline the shape above the moon. Rinse brush.

    25. Use the #1 round brush and Cobalt Turquoise Hue thinned with a small amount of water to shade around the background behind the fish. Rinse brush. Use the same brush and Dioxazine Purple thinned with a small amount of water to shade around the finger with the matching background of the fish. Rinse brush.

    27. Use the #1 liner brush and Titanium White to add details to the middle finger. Rinse brush. Use the same brush with Primary Magenta to paint the background of the chevron on both end fingers; the three petals in the middle finger; and the flowers on top of the stems. Rinse brush.

    29. Use the #1 round brush and Medium Grey Value 6 to fill in the circle on the palm of hand and a band on the two end fingers. Rinse brush.

    31. Use the #1 liner brush and Vermilion to paint around the flower petals in the palm of the hand and the tips of the two end fingers. Rinse brush.

    33. Use the #1 liner brush and Hansa Yellow Medium to paint the petals on the palm of the hand and the chevron on the two outer fingers. Rinse brush.

    35. Use the #1 liner brush and Diarylide Yellow to outline the outer circle of the palm of the hand. Rinse brush.

    37. Use the #1 liner brush and Transparent Red Iron Oxide in the petals on the palm of hand and to outline the middle finger, inner circle, and two outer fingers. Rinse brush.

    39. Use a cosmetic sponge to dab Carbon Black onto the "all-seeing eye" from the Andy Skinner Curiosity stamp set. Carefully and quickly place the stamp centered in the Medium Grey Value 6 circle on the palm of hand. Wash stamp.

    41. Use the #1 round brush to mix (1) part Cerulean Blue with (1) part Cobalt Turquoise Hue. Use the mix to shade around the palm of the hand and to paint the eye of the "all-seeing eye" stamp. Rinse brush. Dip the handle end of the brush into Cobalt Turquoise Hue and make dots on the fish eyes, between the leaves on the middle finger, and on the two outer fingers. Wipe off handle end.

    43. Place the swirl stamp from the Curiosity stamp set onto the glass block, using Carbon Black and a clean cosmetic sponge. Stamp the swirls onto the bottom of the palm of the hand. Wash the stamp and glass block.

    45. Use a #10 flat brush and Media Crackle Glaze to apply all around the hand. Rinse brush. Let dry. (Do not dry with fan or hairdryer; it must air-dry.)

    47. Use the #1 liner brush and Medium Grey Value 6 to paint dashes on the Titanium White outline on the outer hand. Rinse brush.

    49. After Media Crackle Glaze has fully dried, use the #10 flat brush and English Red Oxide Antiquing Cream to paint over all of the crackle. Let dry completely. Rinse brush.

    51. After completely dry, use a damp paper towel to remove some of the English Red Oxide Antiquing Cream so that all the color left is in the cracks of the crackle.

    53. Use the #1 liner brush and Gold (Interference) to paint in between the scroll stamped design. Rinse brush. Use the same brush and load separately with Diarylide Yellow and Hansa Yellow Medium to paint the rays in the pyramid. Rinse brush. (You do not have to wash in between colors, only at the end.) Use the same brush to water down Transparent Red Iron Oxide and use to paint the scroll where it says "All Seeing". Rinse brush.

    55. Use the #1 round brush and Transparent Red Iron Oxide to paint paint a border following the contour of the outer edge of the journal. Rinse brush.

    57. Use scissors to cut a total of 9- 2" pieces of jute or hemp cord. Use three pieces at a time to tie around each binder hole.
