For pattern inspiration, look to Southwest and Aztec rugs and fabric designs.

    1. Choose a piece of furniture with evenly-spaced, flat drawer fronts or cabinet doors. Remove any hardware from the piece and lightly sand the surface with a hand-sander. Carefully clean with a damp cloth to remove any dust or build-up.
    2. Instruction #1
    3. Using a right angle and a ruler, measure and sketch out a design. (Refer to final photo for design suggestion.) Lightly pencil the pattern directly onto the dresser surface.
    4. Instruction #2
    5. Carefully fill in each pattern with the appropriate color with a flat brush. If needed, tape off each space for a crisp edge.
    6. Instruction #3
    7. Apply the desired wax or varnish. Let dry. Once dry, screw in desired knobs and re-assemble the dresser.
    8. Using an electric sander, go along each edge and remove as much paint as desired. (This piece is lightly distressed around the drawer fronts, but that's an aesthetic preference.)
