A trio of glass jars, decorated with beach shells, is perfect for summer storage or display.

SUPPLIES

• water container
• palette or plastic plate
• paper towels
• liner brush
• 3/4" flat brush
• masking tape
• three recycled glass jars with lids
• 1/4" brush
• soft bristle blotter brush
• small plastic cups (about 1" width) with tops. (They can along be sealed with foil or plastic.)

INSTRUCTIONS

NOTES:

Print out and tape a pattern inside each jar. Tape into place with masking tape.

1. Sand Dollars Jar: Pour White into a plastic cup, filling it about 1/3 full. Add a few drops of Yellow, a smaller amount of Orange, and a very small drop of Black, mixing until the color resembles sand. Using a liner brush, outline island. Cover cup of paint.
2. Mix White with a small amount of Black until you have dark/medium grey. Use to outline the sand dollars with a liner brush.
3. Generously dip a soft bristle blotter brush into the sand-colored paint and begin filling in the sand area around the sand dollars with a thick layer of paint. (You will need to use a lot of paint, blotting as you go, to create a textured sand effect.) Let dry.
4. Mix Blue with a few drops of White for light blue and use the mix to outline water with a liner brush. Mix Green with White for a light green mix. Next to light blue mix and light green mix, pour out some White on the palette or plate. Dip 1/4" brush into light blue mix and then into White to fill in the water area. Alternate between light blue mix and light green mix using same method. (White should be streaked throughout water.) Let dry. When dry, add more paint if desired.
5. Mix White with a small amount of Black to make light grey. Pour out White next to the light grey mix on palette or plate. Using generous amounts of light grey mix, fill in the sand dollars with a thick coat of paint using soft bristle blotter brush. (Occasionally use White to make swirls in light grey mix for a slight color change.)
6. Fill in the entire sand dollar surrounding the star and the five small outlined areas with a thick coat of White, using the soft bristle blotter brush. Let dry and add another coat if desired.
7. Using a liner brush, touch up the sand dollar by outlining it again with a dark grey mix and again, just underneath that, outline with the medium grey mix. Also outline the areas painted White with the medium grey mix.
8. Boat and Beach Jar: Pour White into a clean plastic cup, filling it about 1/3 full. Add a few drops of Yellow, a smaller amount of Orange, and a very small drop of Black, mixing until the color resembles sand. Using a liner brush, outline the island.
9. Outline the boat using Black and a liner brush.
10. Mix Green with White for dark green and again for light green. Paint the trim of the boat with dark green mix using a liner brush. Paint the body of the boat with light green mix. Fill in the inside of the boat with White and the bench seat with Black. Let dry. Touch up outline of boat with Black using liner brush if needed.
11. Generously dip the soft bristle blotter brush into the sand-colored paint and begin filling in the sand area around the boat. Fill in the entire area with a thick layer of paint. (You will need to use a lot of paint, blotting as you go, to create a textured sand effect.) Let dry.
12. Mix Blue with a few drops of White for light blue and outline the water with the mix and a liner brush.
13. Mix Green with White for light green. Next to light blue mix and light green mix on palette or plastic plate, pour out some White. Using a 1/4” brush, dip it into the light blue mix and then into White and fill in the water area. Alternate between light blue mix and light green mix using the same method. (White should be streaked throughout the water.) Let dry. When dry, add more paint if desired.
14. Shells on Beach: Pour White paint into a clean plastic cup, filling it about 1/3 full. Add a few drops of Yellow, a smaller amount of Orange, and a very small drop of Black. Mix until color resembles sand. Using a liner brush, outline the island.
15. Mix Purple with a small amount of Black for deep purple. Outline the shell with the mix using a liner brush.
16. Generously dip a soft bristle blotter brush into the sand-colored paint and begin filling in the sand area with a thick layer of paint. (You will need to use a lot of paint, blotting as you go, to create a textured sand effect.) Let dry.
17. Mix Purple with White for medium purple and Blue with White for medium blue. Pour out some White paint next to medium purple and medium blue mixes on palette or plastic plate. Paint the shell with a liner brush alternating between medium purple mix and medium blue mix, painting from side to side throughout the entire shell. Occasionally pull White paint through with a liner brush. Let dry and touch up the outline with the deep purple mix.
18. Mix Blue with a few drops of White for light blue and outline the water with the mix and a liner brush.
19. Mix Green with White for light green. Next to light blue mix and light green mix, pour out some White paint on palette or plastic plate. Using a 1/4" brush, dip it into light blue mix and then into White and fill in the water area. Alternate between light blue mix and light green mix using the same method. (White should be streaked throughout the water.) Let dry; when dry, add more paint if desired.
20. When all jars are dry, remove the patterns from inside the jars.
21. The lids of all three jars are painted Blue Harbor and sealed with Americana Primer & Sealer with a 3/4" flat brush.
