INSTRUCTIONS

NOTES:

You can use a roll of tape, a cup, a plate, or more to trace to make your moon.

  1. Gather your supplies: 10x20" canvas, large basecoat brush, medium flat shader brush, scissors, ruler, pencil, paint palette, circle template (or tape roll, about 4.5" in diameter), 1 sheet of cardstock paper, and paint.
  2. Instruction #1
  3. Use the large basecoat brush to apply 2 coats of Snow (Titanium) White paint on canvas. Let dry completely between coats.
  4. Instruction #2
  5. Use your ruler and pencil to mark the center of your canvas. Do this by marking the middle on the short and long side of the canvas with a pencil. Where they intersect is the center of your canvas.
  6. Instruction #3
  7. Create the circle template by tracing a tape roll (or another circle object) onto a piece of cardstock paper. Cut out the circle and fold in half, and then half again. Open it up and place a pencil dot in the center of the circle. Align the dot on the circle with the dot in the center of your canvas. Lay the circle flat and trace to create the full moon.
  8. Instruction #4
  9. Cut the same circle in half to create the half moon. Trace the half-moon on both sides of the full moon, about 3/4" apart. To make the crescent moon template, mark the center of the half circle and draw a curved line from the outer point of the half circle to the center point, and continue to the other point. Cut. Trace (about 3/4" apart) onto the canvas next to each half moon.
  10. Instruction #5
  11. Using the medium flat shader brush and Vintage Pink, start painting the full moon beginning in the center and working toward the outer edges.
  12. Instruction #6
  13. Add some Buttermilk paint to your brush (no need to rinse your brush). Paint the outer edges and blend with the Vintage Pink as you get towards the center. Allow brushstrokes in Buttermilk to add visual texture to the moon surface. Paint 2-3 coats as needed. Refer to the final photo for inspiration. Rinse and dry brush.
  14. Instruction #7
  15. Using the medium flat brush and True Ochre, begin painting the flat edge of the half-moon, working your way to the center. Wipe off the brush and add Buttermilk to the brush. Begin painting from the round edge of the circle, blending the Buttermilk toward the True Ochre. Allow for brushstrokes to create visual texture as shown. Paint 2-3 coats as needed. Rinse and dry the brush.
  16. Instruction #8
  17. With the same brush, paint the crescent moon beginning with Deep Burgundy on the inner edge. Rinse your brush, wipe dry, and paint with True Ochre on the outer edge of the moon. Blend the True Ochre with the Deep Burgundy paint, leaving some brush strokes for visual texture.
  18. Instruction #9
  19. Once all phases of the moon are painted, go back and add any final touch-ups and hints of color here and there. For example, on the full moon there are added touches of True Ochre. Use Snow (Titanium) White to repair any edges of the moon phase that are over-painted.
  20. Instruction #10
  21. Display horizontally or vertically. Varnish is optional.
  22. Instruction #11
  23. Use the Boho Vibes Acrylic Paint set for the same warm tones seen in this project. Mix and match any of these boho colors to create custom projects of your own!
  24. Instruction #12
