    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Apply White Gesso to the entire canvas and allow to dry completely.
    2. Apply the pattern for Santa including all facial features.
    3. Tear small, unevenly-shaped pieces from the text sheet in the Americana Decou-Page Vintage Silhouette Paper assortment.
    4. Apply Matte Medium to the wooden canvas surface, place a piece of the torn paper down, and immediately top with another coat of Matte Medium. Repeat for each piece of the paper used, randomly placing them on the background and hat areas. Let dry.
    5. Finish with a coat of Matte Medium over the entire canvas.
    6. (See Helpful Hint #1.) Load a mix of Green Gold, Sap Green, and Titan Buff (2:2:1) onto a folded baby wipe. Apply in random areas by rubbing lightly in a circular motion, fading the edges so you do not leave a hard line. Allow to dry completely.
    7. Mix and apply Cobalt Turquoise Hue and Titan Buff (3:1) around the previously-applied color using the same method. Be sure to overlap the previously-applied color and soften the outer edges.
    8. When dry, darken some areas with a sheer layer of Cobalt Turquoise Hue to create variation and tone down the green areas.
    9. Paint over the pom pom and lower lip, repainting the lip with White Gesso after completing the background.
    10. Instruction #9
    11. Stencil Cobalt Turquoise Hue in random areas using the Andy Skinner Shedded Stencil.
    12. Load Phthalo Turquoise onto a folded baby wipe. Darken the outer edges of the canvas, around the face and hat, fading the edges so you do not leave a hard line.
    13. Stencil Titanium White in random areas using the star design from the DecoArt Personally Yours Urban Ink Beliefs Stencil.
    14. When dry, apply a sheer glaze of Cobalt Turquoise Hue over the stars to keep them in the background.
    15. Instruction #13
    16. Create a fleshtone color by adding Quinacridone Gold to White Tinting Base a little at a time until you achieve a flesh color you like.
    17. Basecoat the face and lower lip, painting right over the facial feature lines. (Two light coats will give good coverage, and you should still be able to see the pattern. You can lightly go over the lines with a graphite pencil if needed. )
    18. FACE: Add a touch of the Quinacridone Gold/White Tinting Base mix to Burnt Sienna and shade the recessed areas of the face and neck: above and below eyelids; under all wrinkles; on the bottom of the nose and cheeks; on the corners of the lip; down the right side of the face; on the corners of the eyelids; under the hat on the forehead; and outside of the nose from the eyebrow down to the mustache.
    19. Darken the shading with a sheer glaze of Dioxazine Purple in the most recessed areas: outside of the eyelids at corners; on the corners of lip; at the very bottom of cheeks; and at the upper right corner of forehead.
    20. EYES: Base the whites of the eyes with Titanium White. Paint the irises with a mix of Titanium White and a touch of Phthalo Turquoise.
    21. HAT: Place Diarylide Yellow in the center of the hat for a highlight. (This shading should look too dark and messy right now but will lighten as more details are added.)
    22. Instruction #19
    23. FACE: Highlight the face with Titanium White on areas that protrude: the centers of the cheeks; the ball of the nose; the top of the nostril cover; down the center of the nose; and above all wrinkles.
    24. EYES: Outline, detail, and shade the tops of irises with Phthalo Turquoise.
    25. HAT: Base the hat with Cadmium Red Hue. Shade the hat behind the fur; above the pom pom; and along the right side with a 2:1 mix of Cadmium Red Hue and Sap Green.
    26. Instruction #22
    27. FACE: Give Santa a healthy blush by applying a sheer glaze of Cadmium Red Hue to the bottoms of the cheeks and nose; the corners of the lip; and under the fur on the center of fhe forehead.
    28. Place the nostrils and fill the mouth cavity with Raw Umber.
    29. EYES: Paint the pupils with Carbon Black.
    30. Shade across the top of entire eyeball with Dark Grey Value 3. Highlight the eye with Titanium White by placing a dot in the pupil at 2 o’clock; a curved line in the iris from 9 to 7 o’clock; and several tiny dots in the iris curving from 5 to 3 o’clock.
    31. Line the lashes with Raw Umber.
    32. Instruction #27
    33. FUR: Load an old, flared flat brush (size 10 or 12) with Titanium White on one side and Raw Umber on the other.
    34. Stipple the fur by pouncing the brush straight up and down. Work from left to right, always keeping the Titanium White side of the brush facing toward the left. Pounce in small circles working repeatedly from 6 to 12 o’clock and reloading frequently.
    35. For the pom pom, keep the Titanium White side toward the outer edge; pounce around the perimeter; and finish by adding a few Titanium White pounces in the center.
    36. Instruction #30
    37. HAIR: Base all hair areas with a sheer wash of Titanium White following the direction of the growth with a loose flowing motion. Use a 1/2" flat brush on the beard, a #6 round brush for the mustache and hair, and a 1/2" filbert comb brush for the fly-away hairs up over the fur.
    38. For the eyebrows, apply a sheer wash of Dark Grey Value 3, let dry, and then applied a sheer wash of Titanium White. (Hint: Applying a second wash in some areas will create more depth.)
    39. Instruction #32
    40. Use a liner brush and Titanium White to apply just a few individual hairs to all areas except the mustache.
    41. Instruction #33
    42. HAIR: Add a very sheer wash of Dark Grey Value 3 here and there into the flow of the beard to add depth.
    43. Shade with the same sheer wash under the mouth and mustache; next to the left side of the face; where the hair comes out from under the hat; and on the bottoms of the eyebrows. Line the hairs to the mustache with Titanium White and, when dry, shade across the top with Dark Grey Value 3.
    44. QUOTE: Print the quotation “Dear Santa, Define Naughty…”using your favorite font. Cut out the wording. (Refer to photo.)
    45. Adhere the words by applying a coat of Matte Medium to both the canvas and the back of the word. Place the word on the canvas and apply another coat of Matte Medium over it.
    46. When dry, line an irregular border using Carbon Black. (Hint: You will have the best success using a laser copy done on 32-lb., non-glossy laser paper. Most copy centers offer this.)
    47. BACKGROUND: Randomly stencil small portions of the Americana Pixelated Stencil with Cadmium Red Hue onto the background to carry that color throughout the design.
    48. Apply several coats of Ultra-Matte Varnish to protect the artwork.
    49. Instruction #40
