DIY Earrings | Glitter Tear Drops

DIY Earrings | Glitter Tear Drops

Posted by DecoArt on Feb 27th 2019

The one thing I love about cork is what a great natural material it is to work with. It’s easy to cut and has such a cool texture. It lends to all kinds of projects. When I saw the new DecoArt Glitter Galaxy paint, I knew it would have all kinds of fun applications! It has extra glitter, and layers well, so you can keep glittering it up! DIY Cork Earrings seemed like a fun, and trendy way to make a fashion statement with a little sparkle for a spring and summer wardrobe.

Tip: While I used coasters from the craft store, depending on the thickness, cork can easily tear. When buying cork, look for sheet cork with a backing if you can find it. It is a little more resistant to tearing, durable, and still easy to cut.

Items Needed:

Step 1: Cut a teardrop shape out of our provided template, and trace onto cork.

Step 2: Use a sharp pair of scissors to carefully cut around the teardrop outline.

Step 3: Use low-tack painters tape to mark out shape on the earrings.

Step 4: To get a deeper color, first paint the cork with a coordinating color, and let dry.

To just add a glittery touch, omit the undercoat, and paint directly on the surface.

Step 5: To make them even more sparkly, add a new layer as each one dries. While brushing the glitter on adds a lighter coat of glitter, dabbing it on made it easier to add heavier coats (Though it did increase drying time.).

Step 6: Once painted, immediately remove tape, and let dry.

Step 7: Once earrings are dry, make a small hole in the top of the earrings. Make sure to not have it too close to the top to avoid ripping. (I used a seam ripper. A larger needle, such as an embroidery needle could also work).

Step 8: Use jewelry pliers to loop the jump ring and earring finding, and thread carefully through hole and close finding.
