DIY Faux African Basket Wall Art

When it comes to artwork, I’m a huge fan. I really love finding unique pieces, especially unexpected art. Whether it’s a painted hanging plant incorporated into a gallery wall, a cool brass object, or a piece of fiber art–I’m game!

Lately, I’ve been seeing African baskets popping up all over home décor magazines, Instagram, and Pinterest. These gorgeous baskets have brightly colored designs and can be used to serve food, be a catchall, or can be hung on a wall. I absolutely love the idea of hanging these and incorporating them into wall art.

Since I was so inspired by African baskets, I decided to make my own version out of a woven placemat I grabbed from Ikea! I used the DecoArt Aztec stencil to create my design along with DecoArt Americana Premium Acrylics. These two products made this project super easy. I love how my DIY faux African basket wall art turned out and think it looks similar to the real deal! Check out the video tutorial below to see how you can make your own DIY faux African basket wall art!

10. Align the stencil over the white design and add Carbon Black to the center part of the stencil with a small paint brush. Repeat this step until all of the white designs have a black center.
11. Add white paint around the edge of the placemat about ¼ inch thick.
12. Flip the placemat over, add a dab of hot glue, place the ends of a folded 2-inch piece of twine in the glue, and then add a dab of glue on top to secure.
