Thanks for stopping by and joining me as I share a little Graffiti style step by step tutorial.

A little while back a crafty friend shared a picture of a new Graffiti stencil book on her Facebook page and I just had to go and get myself a copy. The book is by Stencil Republic and comes with several Graffiti stencils taken from different Graffiti artist’s designs.

I love looking at street art when out and about and have been wanting to try and recreate the look of a graffiti covered wall.

Items Needed:

• DecoArt Media Mediums and Specialty Products - Modeling Paste - White (DMM21-71)
• DecoArt Media Mediums and Specialty Products - White Tinting Base (DMM29-71)
• 1/2 Inch MDF 12x12 Inch Square Board
• Andy Skinner Specimen Stamp From Stampendous Skulldoggery Set
• Assorted Brushes
• Grafitti Stencils

Instructions:

I went to my local hardware store and got an MDF sheet cut into 12 inch squares so I could use them as a nice smooth and stable substrate,, a canvas would work just as well, I just prefer working on mdf and wood. I used a large brick wall stencil and applied modeling paste with a pallet knife to sections of the stencil.

The modeling paste has a good enough adhesion there is no need to use a gesso base.

Once the modeling paste is dry apply a coat of tinting base.

Grab a paper towel and apply a coat of the Dark Grey, work small areas so the paint doesn’t fully dry and start to dab away some of the paint to leave a mottled effect.

Repeat once the Dark Grey is dry with the Medium Grey.

Use some craft sponge and dab some colour randomly over the board. I started with the Cerulean Blue, then the Blue Green Light followed by the Green gold.

I like to remove the excess paint from the sponge by dabbing it onto my craft sheet, I find it better to build the paint up gradually rather than going in heavy, it also allows the texture of the sponge to come into play.

To get the distressed white wash look I used the Decoart Chalky Finish White Cream Wax.

When using the white wax it’s best to use the clear cream wax first. Apply a coat of the cram wax, this seals the surface and once dry will give you a little more time when working with the white wax.

Apply the white wax quickly, work it into all the areas around the bricks, almost straight away start to wipe away the wax using a clean cloth, A dish cloth or old t-shirt works really well, don’t use anything that may leave any fluff as the wax gets slightly tacky as it dries.

Keep wiping away the wax till you are happy with the result, you can repeat this step once the wax is dry if you need to.

I have removed most of the wax but it has muted the colours and left a whitewash effect around the bricks.

This is the Graffiti Stencil Book I have Used.

As it’s Easter this month I have used the Jesus Stencil from Brazilian Artists BS.AS.STNCL.

I used tinting base and a stencil brush to apply the stencil to the board.

Carefully fill in the body of the stencil with the stencil brush. I am creating a nice white base so when I re stencil with black the design wont be lost against the background, It also helps add to the graffiti feel.

Reposition the stencil over the top and carefully stencil using the Carbon Black media fluid.

I have stamped using Stazon ink and Andy Skinners new Specimen stamp from Stampendous, I have also added a couple more designs using the Decoart Strength Stencil.

The edges of the board have been distressed using Stazon ink applied with a foam sponge and the edges of the board have been painted black using the American Black.

Once fully dry I added a couple of coats of Satin Varnish.

For this piece I repeated the above steps but have added more stenciling to the back ground, this was done before the main skull image was added, this design is by the artist Run Don’t Walk.  

As I was using bright colours, I stenciled first with tinting base to give a white backing, I then carefully repositioned the stencils and added the colour.
