Create a joyful holiday accent with Americana Acrylics and paper-mache boxes.

    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • pencil
    • painter's tape
    • 1" flat brush
    • #4 flat brush
    • tack rag
    • 220-grit sandpaper
    • set of three paper-mâché boxes
    • 3.5" wood letters spelling "JOY"
    • #4 angle brush
    • embossing stylus, straight pin, or other small sphere
    • coins or small circles to trace (optional)
    • heavy-duty liquid glue

Let dry completely between painting steps.

    1. Remove the box lids and save for another use.
    2. Lightly sand wood letters and wipe with a tack cloth. Use a #4 flat brush to apply Multi-Purpose Sealer to the letters. Wash and dry brush. Use the same brush to paint letters Lamp Black. (Apply additional coats as desired.) Set letters aside.
    3. Use the 1" flat or sponge brush to coat the inside and outside of the boxes with Multi-Purpose Sealer. Wash and dry brush.
    4. Using a 1" flat or sponge brush, paint the inside and outside of the 5" box Leaf Green. Recoat as necessary. Rinse brush. Repeat step, using Santa Red for the 6" box and Citron Green for the 4" box.
    5. Mask off thin stripes on the front of the 5" box with painter's tape. Use the #4 flat brush to paint stripes, alternating Titanium White, Santa Red, and Citron Green. Remove tape.
    6. Lightly trace coins or other circular objects in three sizes with a pencil on the front of the Santa Red 6" box. Use the #4 angle brush to fill in circles (or freehand paint circles) using Titanium White, Leaf Green and Citron Green. (See photo for color placement.) Use multiple coats as necessary.
    7. Use painter's tape to mask the center of the Citron Green 4" box, leaving a 1/4" border around outside of box front. Use Titanium White and the #4 flat brush to paint small rectangles around the border, leaving space between. Apply second coat. Rinse brush.
    8. Using the same brush and Santa Red, repeat the previous step. Rinse brush. Repeat one more time, using Leaf Green to fill in the remaining border space.
    9. Use an embossing stylus, head of pin, or other small sphere dipped in Citron Green to place a dot inside the center Leaf Green border sections.
    10. Apply DuraClear Gloss Varnish to all the boxes and letters, using the 1" brush for boxes and #4 flat brush for letters.
    11. After the sealer is dry, glue letters to boxes using liquid glue. (See photo.)
