Love and Light Hanukkah Plaque

Add color and whimsey to your Hanukkah celebrations with this painted plaque.


    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • tracing paper
    • transfer paper
    • sandpaper
    • ruler
    • pencil
    • 3/4" flat brush
    • #2 liner brush
    • 1/2" flat brush
    • 1/4" flat brush
    • small wire cutters
    • pliers
    • 6" x 8" wooden plaque
    • wire
    • drill and small drill bit



    Let dry completely between painting steps.

    1. Paint the entire plaque using the 3/4" flat brush and Primary Blue.

    3. Measure in 1/4" on the front of the plaque and draw a line with a pencil all the way around. Paint the sides with Desert Turquoise and the 3/4" flat brush. Paint the top 1/4" edge with Desert Turquoise and the 1/4" flat brush.

    5. Measure out six stripes on the front of the plaque. Use Wisteria, Desert Turquoise, and Ocean Blue to fill in the stripes with the 1/2" flat brush.

    7. Use sandpaper to distress the edges and front of the plaque.

    9. Use the tracing and transfer papers and a pencil to transfer the design pattern to the front of the plaque.
    10. Use the #2 liner brush and Primary Blue to fill in the letters and outline the heart and Star of David. Use the same brush to make little dash lines in the letters with Desert Turquoise. Fill in the heart and Star of David. (Refer to photo.)

    12. Freehand a checkerboard pattern around the edge of the plaque with the 1/2" flat brush and Primary Blue and Wisteria.
    13. Instruction #7
    14. Drill two small holes in the upper corners of the plaque.
    15. Cut off an 18" piece of wire. Use the pliers to make a ball of wire. Feed it through the front of one of the holes. Pull the wire up in the back and wrap it around a pencil three times. Slip it in the back of the other hole and make that end a ball too.
