Painted 100 days of school banner

Announce the start of the school year in bright, energizing colors on this high-flying banner.

SUPPLIES

    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • tracing paper
    • transfer paper
    • scissors
    • #2 round brush
    • #12 flat brush
    • #1 liner brush
    • hole punch
    • jute
    • black pen
    • felt banners

    INSTRUCTIONS

    NOTES:

    Let dry completely between painting steps.

    1. Use a pen and the tracing and transfer papers to trace and transfer each pattern background to a different banner. (I put matching backgrounds on the same color banner, but it is a personal preference.)
    2. Use a #2 round brush and True Red to basecoat both apple pennants. Rinse brush.

    4. Use a #2 round brush and Primary Yellow to basecoat both ruler pennants. Rinse brush.

    6. Use a #2 round brush and load separately with Calypso Blue, Tangerine, and Wisteria to basecoat both book pennants. Rinse brush before switching colors and at the end.

    8. Use the same brush and Primary Yellow to basecoat the pencils. Rinse brush. Use the same brush and Light Buttermilk to paint the wooden tip.

    10. Continue adding Light Buttermilk to the apples with the same brush.

    12. Fill in book pages with Light Buttermilk and the same brush. Rinse brush.

    14. Use the #1 liner brush and Lamp Black to add inch lines and numbers to both ruler pennants.

    16. Using the same brush and color, add the pencil details and lead.

    18. Use the same brush and color to add the seeds and stems to both apple pennants.

    20. Use the same brush and color to make light page marks on both book pennants. Rinse brush. Let all dry completely.

    22. Use a black pen and the tracing and transfer papers to trace and transfer the number, letters, swirls, and word patterns to the pennants.
    23. Use a #2 round brush and Lamp Black to outline and fill in "100".

    25. Use a #12 flat brush and Lamp Black to fill in the letter "D". Rinse brush.

    27. Use a #2 round brush and Lamp Black to fill in the letter "a".

    29. Use the same brush and color to fill in the letter "y".

    31. Use the same brush and color to fill in the letter "s".

    33. Use a #1 liner brush and Lamp Black to fill in the swirls and "of".

    35. Use the same brush and color to fill in the word "school". Rinse brush.

    37. Use a #2 round brush and Citron Green to fill in between the stripes on the "y". Rinse brush.

    39. Use a #1 liner brush and Citron Green to outline part of the letter "y". (See photo for placement.) Let dry completely.

    41. Once the banner is fully dry, use a hole punch to add a hole at each end of each pennant. Use scissors to cut ribbon, jute, or yarn long enough to attach all pennants into a banner. Tie a knot at each end, and it is ready to hang.
