Painted Mouse and Feather Spool Toys

Create these easy, colorful toys for Kitty with Americana® Multi-Surface Acrylics.

SUPPLIES

    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • tracing paper
    • transfer paper
    • scissors
    • painter's tape
    • 3/4" flat brush
    • #6 flat brush
    • hot glue gun and glue sticks
    • assorted buttons
    • #1 liner brush
    • #1 round brush
    • feathers
    • pen or pencil
    • wooden dowel rod
    • jute
    • jingle bell
    • wooden spool
    • drill gun
    • drill bits
    • papier mâché egg
    • yarn
    • felt
    • carpet
    • wooden block

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Use a 3/4" flat brush and Coastal Waters to paint the entire wooden spool. Rinse brush. Let dry.

    3. Once dry, use a pen or pencil and the tracing and transfer papers to trace and transfer the "MEOW" pattern.

    5. Use the #1 round brush and Lipstick to paint on the word "MEOW". Rinse brush.

    7. Use the #1 round brush and Cotton Ball to paint the spool's outer rim. Rinse brush.

    9. Use the #1 round brush and Brown Sugar to paint Xs to look like cat food in between each letter. Rinse brush.

    11. Use the #1 round brush and Black Tie to paint stripes around the outer rim. Rinse brush.

    13. Work in small sections with a hot glue gun and glue sticks to apply glue to the middle of the spool. Wrap the yarn around it until it is completely filled. (Work in small sections since the glue dries quickly.)

    15. Once the wrapping is done, use scissors to cut off the end piece.

    17. Use the glue gun and glue sticks to adhere feathers in the top hole of the spool.

    19. Use the glue gun and glue sticks to wrap the jute around a papier-mâché egg completely.

    21. When you come to the end of the egg, leave a little tail and use scissors to cut.

    23. Use the glue gun to adhere two buttons for eyes in a color of choice. Glue on a button nose in a color of choice.

    25. On the back of the felt, trace and transfer the mouse ears pattern with a pen or pencil. Use scissors to cut out.

    27. Use a pencil or pen and the tracing and transfer papers to trace around the wooden block on the carpet. Use scissors to cut out.

    29. Tear painter's tape to make interesting angles on the wooden block. Use the 3/4" flat brush and Night Sky to paint one section. Rinse brush. Remove the tape and let dry.

    31. Reposition the tape on the Night Sky section slightly so you can paint the other side. (Refer to photo.) Use the 3/4" flat brush to paint the other side with Inch Worm. Rinse brush.

    33. On the opposite side of the block, repeat the process from the previous step: Use the 3/4" flat brush to paint one section in Waterfront. Rinse brush. Let dry.

    35. Reposition the tape so you can paint the other side. Use the 3/4" flat brush and Pewter to paint the remaining section. Rinse brush. Remove tape.

    37. Use a pen or pencil and the tracing and transfer papers to trace and transfer the word pattern "POUNCE" onto one side.

    39. Use the #1 round brush to fill in the word "POUNCE" with Waterfront. Rinse brush.

    41. Use the same brush to paint a shadow behind the letters using Cotton Ball. Rinse brush.

    43. Use the handle end of the #1 round brush and Iris to make random polka dots in the word "POUNCE". Wipe off the handle.

    45. Use the 3/4" flat brush on the front to paint three sections. (You can use painter's tape to block off.) Use Waterfront with the 3/4" flat brush for the top. Rinse brush. Use the same brush to paint the two sides with Iris. Rinse brush. Use the same brush for the middle using Ballerina. Rinse brush.

    47. Use a pen or pencil and the tracing and transfer papers to trace and transfer the "CAUTION CAT AT PLAY" pattern. Use the #1 round brush and Night Sky to paint on the word "CAUTION" and to add dashes to separate the Waterfront section. Rinse brush.

    49. Use the #1 round brush and Inch Worm to paint random polka dots in the Iris section. Rinse brush.

    51. Use the #1 liner brush and Pewter to paint the words "CAT AT PLAY". Rinse brush.

    53. Use pen or pencil and the tracing and transfer papers to trace and transfer the "CAT ATTACK" pattern. Use the #1 round brush with Inch Worm to paint the cat head in around the "C". Rinse brush. Use the #1 liner brush and Cotton Ball to paint on the word "CAT". Rinse brush. Use the same brush with Iris to paint on the word "ATTACK" and outline the cat head. Rinse brush.

    55. Use the glue gun and glue sticks to adhere the carpet material to the top of the wooden block.

    57. Use a drill and appropriate drill bit to drill a hole on the top. (It will pull some of the carpet off, but that is OK.)

    59. Use the #6 flat brush and Waterfront to paint where the carpet has lifted. Rinse brush.

    61. Use the glue gun and glue sticks to adhere the ears on the mouse and the jingle bell on his chin.

    63. Use the #6 flat brush and Ballerina to paint the dowel. Rinse brush.

    65. Use scissors to cut another piece of jute the length you would like. Wrap and tie one end to the dowel and glue the other end on the top of the mouse with the glue gun. Use the glue gun and glue sticks to adhere the dowel in the hole. Let dry. Once dry, Kitty can play away!
