Retro Christmas Ornament | Dot Art

Create your own unique gift box and retro Christmas ornament using relaxing dot art.

SUPPLIES

    • palette or plastic plate
    • scissors
    • ruler
    • hole punch
    • tissue paper
    • paper shreds or tissue
    • wooden skewer
    • paper mache box
    • thin ribbon or string
    • watercolor paper
    • -fine grit sandpaper
    • •pencil
    • unfinished wood bulb ornament

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Start with a retro inspired, unfinished wood ornament.

    3. Pick a white, paper mache box that fits the ornament.

    5. Cut of the original hanger/string.

    7. Sand the entire surface using a fine sandpaper.

    9. Wipe off dust.

    11. Basecoat the entire ornament using a flat brush with Cactus Flower Americana Acrylic. Allow to dry.

    13. Paint the entire exterior surface of the box using a flat brush with White Enchanted Shimmer. Allow to dry.

    15. Lightly sand the ornaments surface and wipe off the dust. Add a second coat of the Cactus Flower Americana Acrylic and allow to dry completely.

    17. Choose about 5 different size of dotting tools. These can be pencil erasers, ends of paint brushes and a wooden skewer.

    19. For easy dotting, pour out a small amount of the following colors onto the plate or palette: Snow White, Sea Breeze, Primary Red and Pistachio Mint.

    21. Using Primary Red and the largest dotting tool, place the first (largest) dot in the very center of the ornament.

    23. Dot smaller red dots on each side of the large dot. Be sure to reload with paint for each dot.

    25. Using the next size down dotting tool, place the next red dots.

    27. Place smaller dots at the end of each of the previous red dots.

    29. Keep decreasing the size of the dots until you reach the ends of the ornament. Always remember to add fresh paint after each dot.

    31. Next, place the largest center dots on either side of the red line of dots using Sea Breeze.

    33. Continue to place descending sized dots on either side of the largest blue dots. Be sure to add them in a gently curving line to resemble the shape of the ornament. Do the same using Snow White and the same dotting tools.

    35. (TIP: make sure to curve each line of dots to form to the ornament shape to give a dimensional look.) The next line of dots with be with the Pistachio Mint followed by Primary Red. Dot on Silver Extreme Sheen around the top of the ornament.

    37. Using a liner brush and the sample star pattern, paint Cactus Flower stars on the left of each side of the box. Using a liner brush, paint larger star patterns onto the bottom right of each side of the box, with Sea Breeze.

    39. Place silver dots above each blue star on the box.

    41. Using a flat brush, paint a small piece of watercolor paper with Pistachio Mint. Allow to dry.

    43. Dot centers onto each star using Primary Red.

    45. Using a straight edge and the provided diamond template, trace the shape onto the painted paper with a pencil.

    47. Place three Cactus Flower dots onto the diamond shaped tag.

    49. Punch a hole in the tag.

    51. Paint a Cactus Flower star onto the box lid using a liner brush.

    53. Add a hanger to the ornament using a silver ribbon. Place tissue paper shreds into the box and insert ornament.
