INSTRUCTIONS
- Start with a retro inspired, unfinished wood ornament.
- Pick a white, paper mache box that fits the ornament.
- Cut of the original hanger/string.
- Sand the entire surface using a fine sandpaper.
- Wipe off dust.
- Basecoat the entire ornament using a flat brush with Cactus Flower Americana Acrylic. Allow to dry.
- Paint the entire exterior surface of the box using a flat brush with White Enchanted Shimmer. Allow to dry.
- Lightly sand the ornaments surface and wipe off the dust. Add a second coat of the Cactus Flower Americana Acrylic and allow to dry completely.
- Choose about 5 different size of dotting tools. These can be pencil erasers, ends of paint brushes and a wooden skewer.
- For easy dotting, pour out a small amount of the following colors onto the plate or palette: Snow White, Sea Breeze, Primary Red and Pistachio Mint.
- Using Primary Red and the largest dotting tool, place the first (largest) dot in the very center of the ornament.
- Dot smaller red dots on each side of the large dot. Be sure to reload with paint for each dot.
- Using the next size down dotting tool, place the next red dots.
- Place smaller dots at the end of each of the previous red dots.
- Keep decreasing the size of the dots until you reach the ends of the ornament. Always remember to add fresh paint after each dot.
- Next, place the largest center dots on either side of the red line of dots using Sea Breeze.
- Continue to place descending sized dots on either side of the largest blue dots. Be sure to add them in a gently curving line to resemble the shape of the ornament. Do the same using Snow White and the same dotting tools.
- (TIP: make sure to curve each line of dots to form to the ornament shape to give a dimensional look.) The next line of dots with be with the Pistachio Mint followed by Primary Red. Dot on Silver Extreme Sheen around the top of the ornament.
- Using a liner brush and the sample star pattern, paint Cactus Flower stars on the left of each side of the box. Using a liner brush, paint larger star patterns onto the bottom right of each side of the box, with Sea Breeze.
- Place silver dots above each blue star on the box.
- Using a flat brush, paint a small piece of watercolor paper with Pistachio Mint. Allow to dry.
- Dot centers onto each star using Primary Red.
- Using a straight edge and the provided diamond template, trace the shape onto the painted paper with a pencil.
- Place three Cactus Flower dots onto the diamond shaped tag.
- Punch a hole in the tag.
- Paint a Cactus Flower star onto the box lid using a liner brush.
- Add a hanger to the ornament using a silver ribbon. Place tissue paper shreds into the box and insert ornament.
- Use the same (or different) ribbon to tie a bow onto the box.
- This DIY gift has a classy and retro feel but is fun and easy to make!
