"S is for Spring" Wall Décor

Let this tulip, with the colors of spring in Americana® Acrylics, bring the hope of warmer days to any décor.

SUPPLIES

    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • tracing paper
    • sandpaper
    • soft cloth
    • 1" flat brush
    • burlap
    • #10 flat brush
    • 3/4" wash brush
    • stylus
    • #10/0 liner brush
    • palette knife
    • #4 liner brush
    • plastic wrap
    • craft or wood glue
    • 1/2" rake brush
    • graphite paper
    • canvas paper
    • mat board
    • butterfly punch
    • raised wooden panel

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Sand the wooden panel and remove dust with a soft cloth.
    2. Use a 1” flat brush and Americana Primer & Sealer to coat the piece of wood. Let dry.
    3. Sand the wooden surface again and remove dirt.
    4. Use a palette knife to mix Wasabi Green and Light Buttermilk 1:1.
    5. Use a 1” flat brush to paint the entire wooden surface and both pieces of the mat board with the mix. Let dry.
    6. Tear a piece of plastic wrap long enough to cover the wooden surface.
    7. Use a 1” flat brush and water to dilute Wasabi Green. Brush over the entire wooden surface ONLY. Place plastic wrap over the area and squish it together, creating lots of texture. Remove the plastic wrap in an upward motion. Let dry completely.
    8. Trace the pattern onto the mat board. (Keep a color photocopy near for reference.)
    9. Use a #4 liner brush and Hauser Medium Green to paint the leaves and stem.

    11. Use a #10 flat brush and a side-load of Plantation Pine to shade these areas to separate.
    12. Dry-brush Olive Green in the middle section of the left leaf. Let dry.

    14. Use a #10 flat brush and a side-load of Olive Green to highlight the rest of these areas. Let dry.
    15. Use a #10/0 liner brush and Plantation Pine to add detail lines in the leaves. Let dry.
    16. Use a #4 liner brush and Cranberry Wine to paint petals A and B. (Refer to pattern.) Let dry.

    18. Use a #10 flat brush and a side-load of Napa Red to shade the bottom "v" sections. Let dry.
    19. Use a #10 flat brush and a side-load of Melon to highlight the top peak area of B and the edge of A. Let dry.
    20. Use a #10 flat brush and a side-load of Antique Maroon to shade a second time in the bottom "v" sections. Let dry.

    22. Use a #4 flat brush to paint petals C and D with Melon. Let dry.
    23. Use a #10 flat brush and a side-load of Cranberry Wine to shade in the "v" area of C and the right and left sides of D. Let dry.
    24. Use a #10 flat brush and a side-load of Melon plus Light Buttermilk to highlight the top peak area of C and the upper edge of D. (Refer to photo at STEP 17.) Let dry.
    25. Use a #10 flat brush and a side-load of Napa Red to deepen the shade areas. Let dry.
    26. Use a #10 flat brush and a side-load of Antique Maroon to deepen further at the bottom of D. (Refer to photo at STEP 17.) Let dry.
    27. Use a #4 flat brush and Melon to paint petals E and F. Let dry.
    28. Use a #10 flat brush and a side-load of Cranberry Wine to apply the first shade at the base of petal E (go up 2/3 of the height) and up the outer edge of F. Let dry.
    29. Repeat the shading with Napa Red and then Antique Maroon in the deepest areas. Let dry.
    30. Side-load a #10 flat brush with a 1:1 mix of Melon and Light Buttermilk to highlight top peak of E and the inside edge of F. Let dry.
    31. Use a palette knife to make a 1:1 mix of Melon and Light Buttermilk. Save the mix for future steps. Use a #10 flat brush and this mix to paint the front petal. Let dry.
    32. Use a 3/4" wash brush and a side-load of Cranberry Wine to shade the bottom and up both sides of center. (Refer to photo at STEP 17.) (Make it wide.) Let dry.
    33. Use a 3/4" wash brush and a side-load of Napa Red to shade the same area. (This time, don’t make it as wide.) Let dry.
    34. Use a 3/4" wash brush and a side-load of the Melon/Light Buttermilk mix from Step 27 to highlight the outer edges of this petal. (Do one side at a time, drying in between sides.) Let dry.
    35. Use a 1/2" rake or liner brush to add lines of the Melon/Light Buttermilk mix from the outer edges toward the center vein. Let dry.

    37. Use a 1/2" rake or liner brush to add lines of Cranberry Wine and Napa Red from the inner vein area toward the outer edge. (But not all the way.) Let dry.
    38. Use a #10 flat brush to add thin glazes of Antique Maroon to some areas of the leaves. Let dry.
    39. Cut the butterfly out of canvas paper or cardstock. Use a #10 flat brush to paint with Cranberry Wine. Let dry.
    40. Use a #4 liner brush and Melon to paint details on the wings. Let dry.
    41. Use a #4 liner brush and Bittersweet Chocolate to paint the body area and antennae. Let dry.
    42. Use a #10 flat brush side-loaded with Antique Maroon to add shading to the wings against the body and to separate. Let dry.
    43. Use a #10 flat brush side-loaded with Melon to add highlights to the wings and body. (Refer to photo for placement). Let dry. Bend the wings up.
    44. Use a #10/0 liner brush and Plantation Pine for lettering “is for”; “Spring” is done in Melon. Let dry.

    46. Use a #4 flat brush and a 3:1 mix of Cranberry Wine and Antique Maroon to paint a border around the worded area. Let dry.
    47. Use a 3/4" wash brush and Plantation Pine to paint the edges and back.
    48. Lightly mist the entire surface of all pieces with Americana Matte Spray Finish.
    49. To assemble: With a 1" flat brush, apply Americana Matte Decou-Page to the area where you will be placing the burlap. (Be generous.) Apply the burlap and smooth out.
    50. With a 1" flat brush, apply Decou-Page to the backs of the mat boards. Place onto the wooden panel. Smooth out and let dry.
    51. Place a piece of plastic wrap over the project and a heavy book on top. Let dry completely.
    52. With glue placed on the back of the body area, affix the butterfly to the leaf (or anywhere you desire).
