Start the Day Out Right Sign

Jumpstart your morning with this mixed media canvas featuring Traditions™ Artist Acrylics.


    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • #8 round brush
    • #12 flat brush
    • random marking tools (texture comb, old credit card, finger, anything with tip, brayer, etc.)
    • 6" x 6" gallery wrapped canvas
    • assorted stencils
    • permanent black marker pen (medium tip)


    1. Apply a thick coat of Faux Finishing Medium with a #12 flat brush to the front and sides of the canvas. Make texture marks with a texture comb or anything that can make marks or a pattern. Let dry thoroughly.
    2. Apply random layers of paint on the front and sides of the canvas with a damp, large #12 brush, trying not to blend each color with others; use Naphthol Red, Phthalo Blue-Green, and Titanium White.
    3. When still wet, wipe some paint away with a dry paper towel to bring out the texture of the faux finish. Let dry.
    4. Using stencils of your choice, stencil over parts of canvas with a #12 flat brush and paint a color of your choice for the second layer. Let dry.
    5. Outline the cup and sun template with pencil onto the canvas. Refer to photo for placement.
    6. Using a #12 flat brush, paint cup and sun with with a paint color of your choice, making them darker on one side for shading. Use Titanium White to lighten colors for highlights; use Burnt Sienna and Titanium White for coffee inside cup. Let dry.
    7. Using a #12 flat brush, paint some flowers and polka dots on the cup using Glorious Gold for accent color. (Use handle end of the brush to create dots.)
    8. Edge the canvas with your finger and Glorious Gold. Let dry.
    9. Outline the sun and cup with black marker.
    10. Computer-generate the words “Start the Day Out Right” and adhere them to canvas with Americana Gloss Decou-Page. Apply Decou-Page on top of the words. Let dry.
    11. When dry, outline the words with the marker.
    12. When all is dry, using a #12 flat brush, apply two coats of DuraClear Satin Varnish.
    13. (Optional) Add a kitchen knob or handle to the top of the canvas as an accent.
