Whimsical Succulent Teapot with Critters

Add succulents to a canvas for a whimsical wall accent made with Americana® Acrylics.


    • water container

    • 3/4" flat brush
    • 1/2" flat brush
    • 1/4" flat brush
    • #5 round brush

    Let dry completely between painting steps.

    1. If needed, sand the wood panel to remove any rough spots or edges. Wipe away any sanding dust with a paper towel.

    3. Using a 3/4" flat brush, paint the entire wood panel in Snow White. Let dry. Once dry, use the provided pattern to transfer the teapot, book, bird, and snail using the transfer paper and a pencil.

    5. Using a 1/2" flat and #5 round brush, paint the teapot in Blue Chiffon. Using the same brushes, paint the book in Hauser Light Green.

    7. Using a #3 round and liner brush, basecoat the bird in Coral Shell, Poodleskirt Pink, and Spa Blue. (Refer to photo for color placement.)

    9. Using a #3 round brush, basecoat the snail shell in Coral Shell. Paint the snail body in Hauser Light Green.

    11. Using a liner brush, outline the bird in Boysenberry Pink. Using the same brush, add dots on the wings and dashes around the belly in Hauser Light Green. Add details in the wings, dots in the body, and paint the legs in Pansy Lavender. Add dashes in Spa Blue to the wings. Using the liner brush, add leafing details to the belly in Coral Shell. Use the handle end of the brush to add a dot of Lamp Black for the eye. (Refer to photo or detail placement. Use the pattern provided, if needed.)

    13. Outline the snail and add a dot in the body and dots for the eye using a liner brush in Antique Green. Outline the shell in Pansy Lavender. Add triangles in Poodleskirt Pink, following the spiral of the shell. Outline the triangles in Boysenberry Pink. Add a dot to the tip of the triangle in Pansy Lavender.

    15. Using a liner brush, loosely outline the teapot in Peacock Teal. Loosely add details in the same color. (If needed, use the pattern provided with transfer paper.)

    17. Using the pattern, the transfer paper, and a pencil, transfer the back two succulents. Paint the cactus on the left in Hauser Medium Green with a #3 round brush. Paint the flowers on the top in Boysenberry Pink. Paint the aloe on the right in Hauser Light Green.

    19. Outline and add detailing to the cactus on the left in Pansy Lavender using a liner brush. Let dry. Once dry, add the cactus spines in Coral Shell. Outline the aloe on the right in Poodleskirt Pink, adding notches on the outside of the leaves. Use a liner brush and Blue Chiffon to add the lines throughout the aloe.

    21. Transfer the front left succulent with the transfer paper and a pencil. Using a #3 round brush, paint the petals in Sea Glass, leaving a small gap between the petals.

    23. Outline each petal in Boysenberry Pink using a liner brush. Add lines inside of the petals, following the curvature of the petal, in Coral Shell using a liner brush.

    25. Transfer the succulent on the front right. Mix (1) part Yellow Green with (1) part Snow White. Use fingers to flatten a #4 round brush. Beginning at the base of the stem, create a rectangle to form a succulent nodule with the mix. (Refer to photo.)

    27. Outline the nodules with a liner brush in Pansy Lavender. Using the very tip of the bristles, add dots in Poodleskirt Pink throughout the entire succulent.

    29. Outline the book in Antique Green with a liner brush. If desired, transfer the lettering provided or create your own lettering. Paint in the wording with the liner brush in Antique Green.

    31. Paint the entire background in Pineapple using a 3/4" flat and #3 round brush.

    33. Mix together (1) part Snow White with (1) part Pineapple. Using the 3/4" and 1/4" flat brushes, dry-brush the mix onto the background. Leave a gap between the teapot and dry-brushing, allowing some of the Pineapple color to show through. Save mix for future step.

    35. Pencil in a line 2-1/2" from the bottom of the panel to create a ground line. Paint the ground in Poodleskirt Pink with the 1/4" and 3/4" flat brushes. Mix together (1) part Snow White with (1) part Poodleskirt Pink. Once the paint has dried in the panel, dry-brush the ground in the mix using a 3/4" flat brush. Allow a small gap between the ground and book. (Refer to photo.)

    37. Mix together (1) part Sea Glass with (1) part Spa Blue. Using a #4 round brush, loosely paint in thick lines approximately 1" apart. (These lines do not have to be perfectly straight.) Using a liner brush, add lines between the thick ones in Hauser Medium Green. Once the lines have dried, use the mix from Step 17 to add lines inside the thick Hauser Medium Green lines with a liner brush.
