Winter Chill Glittery Canvas

Let it snow (or not) but celebrate the season on this mixed media canvas.


    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • tracing paper
    • transfer paper
    • scissors
    • pencil
    • #10 flat brush
    • hot glue gun and glue sticks
    • wax paper or freezer paper
    • #12 flat brush
    • palette knife
    • 12" x 12" canvas
    • jute, hemp, string, or yarn
    • brayer
    • #1 round brush
    • 2 sheets of scrapbook paper
    • fine glitter
    • public domain image



    Let dry completely between painting steps.

    1. Make sure the canvas is dust free. Be sure to put the canvas on top of freezer or wax paper to protect your work space.

    3. Drip a few drops of Dioxazine Purple, Cerulean Blue, Silver, and Phthalo Blue randomly and quickly onto the canvas.

    5. Use a brayer to loosely blend all the colors. Be careful not to roll over too much or colors will become muddy.

    7. While paint is still wet, pour some loose glitter on top. Let dry completely.

    9. Use a #10 flat brush and Translucent White to paint wind swirls loosely and randomly. Rinse brush.

    11. Use a palette knife to spread on White Gesso to create the snowy ground about 1/4 of the way up from the bottom. With a very little Gesso on the palette knife, scrape a snowy border around the perimeter of the sky. Wash the palette knife.

    13. Using the tracing and transfer papers and a pencil, trace and transfer the tree patterns onto the back of one of the metallic scrapbook papers.

    15. Use scissors to cut out the three trees.

    17. Use a #12 flat brush and Matte Medium to adhere the trees to the canvas. Brush more Matte Medium on top to seal. Rinse brush.

    19. Print off a public domain deer of your choice and cut out with scissors.

    21. Use the #12 flat brush and Matte Medium to adhere the deer to the center of the canvas. Rinse brush.

    23. Use a #1 round brush heavily load with Craft Twinkles Champagne to fill in the entire deer. Rinse brush.

    25. Use the #12 flat brush to apply Matte Medium quickly to the snowy ground. Rinse brush.

    27. Immediately pour more loose glitter on the snow.

    29. Use a #1 round brush and Green Gold to fill in the trees. Rinse brush.

    31. Use the same brush and Sap Green to outline the trees. Rinse brush.

    33. Use a #1 round brush to mix a small amount of water with Translucent White. Splatter onto canvas. (This will give you the effect of snow falling.) Rinse brush.

    35. Wrap yarn, jute, or hemp around the canvas and use scissors to cut.

    37. Use a hot glue gun to adhere two strands of the yarn to each side of the canvas. (See photo.) Glue to the back of the canvas.

    39. Use the second scrapbook paper with letters to cut out different fonts or print off your own.

    41. Use scissors to cut out a quote of your choice.

    43. Use a #12 flat brush and Matte Medium to adhere the quote to the canvas where you choose. Rinse brush.
