Winter Girl and Deer Mixed Media Stocking

Hang a one-of-a-kind stocking by the chimney this year with DecoArt Media®.

SUPPLIES

    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate

    INSTRUCTIONS

    NOTES:

    Let dry completely between painting steps.

    1. Tear a piece of wax paper. Fold it and put in inside the stocking so that the paint doesn't seep through the back.

    3. Un-flip the fold on the top of the stocking.

    5. Go back and forth on the stocking with the DecoArt Media Misters in Primary Magenta, Primary Cyan, and White (Shimmer) until the background is how you want it. (Use a drop cloth to protect the work surface or place the stocking in a cardboard box before spraying.) Let dry completely.

    7. Use the #10 flat brush and Titanium White to paint on the snow. Rinse brush.

    9. Use the #1 round brush to mix (3) parts Titanium White with a very small amount of Dioxazine Purple. Use the mix to paint one mountain. Using the same brush (unrinsed), add a very small amount of Cerulean Blue. Use the new mix to paint on a second mountain. Rinse brush. Use the same brush with Titanium White to add snow and detail lines on the mountains. Rinse brush.

    11. Use the #12 flat brush and Primary Cyan to paint on the rock cliff. Rinse brush. Side-load the same brush with Cobalt Teal Hue to add detail to the cliff. Rinse brush. Using the same brush, repeat with Dioxazine Purple to add more details to the cliff. Rinse brush.

    13. Use a palette knife to stir the White Gesso and apply it to the top of the cliff to appear like snow. Rinse the palette knife.

    15. Use a pencil or pen and the tracing and transfer papers to trace and transfer the houses onto two different colors of fabric of your choice.

    17. Use the #10 flat brush and Raw Sienna to paint the roof and garage. Rinse brush. Use the same brush with Blue Green Light to paint on the door. Rinse brush. Use the #1 round brush and Cobalt Teal Hue to paint on the two windows. Rinse brush.

    19. Use the #1 liner brush and Titanium White to outline and to add details to the house and string for the lights. Rinse brush.

    21. Use the #1 liner brush and Green Gold to paint on the wreaths on the door, above the garage, and to add some lights on the strand. Rinse brush. Use the same brush to add a few Raw Sienna lights. Rinse brush.

    23. Use the #1 liner brush to mix (3) parts Titanium White with a small amount of Quinacridone Magenta. Use the mix to add bows and berries to the wreaths and to add some lights on the strand. (Save the mix for future step.) Rinse brush. Use the same brush and Primary Cyan to add the rest of the lights on the strand. Rinse brush.

    25. Use the #10 flat brush and Green Gold to paint the roof on the second house. Rinse brush.

    27. Use the same brush and Raw Sienna to paint the chimney and door. Rinse brush. Use the same brush with Green Gold to add a porch roof over the door. Rinse brush.

    31. Use the #1 liner brush and Blue Green Light to add a scallops to the roof. Rinse brush.

    35. Use a round found object or household item to trace a circle onto the moon-colored fabric. Use scissors to cut out.

    37. Use the #12 flat brush and Raw Sienna to shade the moon. Rinse brush.

    39. Use the #12 flat brush with the Americana Fabric Decou-Page to adhere the houses and moon. Rinse brush.

    41. Use a pencil or pen and the tracing and transfer papers to trace and transfer the deer pattern to a deer-colored fabric.

    43. Use the #1 liner brush and Titan Buff to paint the insides of ears, belly, and underneath the tail. Rinse brush.

    45. Use #1 liner brush and Titanium White to paint the candy cane in the deer's mouth. Rinse brush.

    47. Use the #1 liner brush and Burnt Umber to outline the deer and to fill in the hooves, eyes, and nose. Rinse brush.

    49. Use the #1 liner brush and Cadmium Red Hue to paint the stripes on the candy cane. (Refer to photo.) Rinse brush.

    51. Use a pencil or pen and the tracing and transfer papers to trace and transfer the little girl pattern onto a light-colored fabric.

    53. Use #1 liner brush to mix (2) parts Titan Buff, (1) part Raw Sienna, and a very small amount of Quinacridone Magenta. Use the mix to paint the girl's skin. Rinse brush. Use the same brush and Burnt Umber to paint on her hair and eyebrows. Rinse brush.

    55. Use the #1 liner brush and Titanium White to paint around the pupils. Rinse brush.

    57. Use the #1 liner brush to mix (4) parts Titanium White with a small amount of Blue Green Light. Use the mix to fill in the nightgown and eye shadow. Rinse brush.

    59. Use the #1 liner brush and Burnt Sienna to paint the pupils. Rinse brush.

    61. Use the #1 liner brush and the Titanium White/Quinacridone Magenta mix from step 12 to fill in the nightgown sleeves and the girl's lips. Rinse brush. Load the same brush with Quinacridone Magenta to paint on the bow and polka dots on the nightgown. Rinse brush. Let dry completely.

    63. Use scissors to cut out the little girl and the deer.

    65. Use the #12 flat brush and Fabric Decou-Page to adhere the deer and then the girl (sitting on top of the deer). Rinse brush. Let dry completely.

    67. Use the 6" x 8" doily stencil from the Americana Doily Stencils and load a cosmetic sponge with Titanium White to pounce on random snowflakes. Wash the stencil.

    69. Use the Christmas or pine tree stamps with a black ink pad to add some trees around the houses. Wash the stamps.

    71. Use a Christmas stamp of choice to apply on the moon with a black ink pad. Wash stamp.

    73. Use a stamp of choice to add to one of the houses with a black ink pad. Wash stamp.

    75. Use the #10 flat brush to add water to Cobalt Teal Hue on the palette or plastic plate. Brush the thinned Cobalt Teal Hue over the Gesso "snow" to shade it. Rinse brush.

    77. Use the #1 liner brush and Cadmium Red Hue to fill in areas on the stamp applied in step 37. Rinse brush.

    79. Use a pen or pencil and the tracing and transfer papers to trace and transfer the snowman, poles, and skating rink. (Refer to photo for placement.)

    81. Use the #1 liner brush and Cobalt Teal Hue to fill in the ice rink; shade under trees and houses and the snowman; and place circles on the poles. Rinse brush. Use the same brush with Titanium White to add highlights to the ice. Rinse brush.

    83. Use the #1 liner brush and Green Gold to paint the snowman's scarf. Use the same brush with Cadmium Orange Hue to paint on the carrot nose. Rinse brush. Use the same brush with Cadmium Red Hue to paint the band on the hat and stripes on the candy cane poles. Rinse brush. Use the same brush with Burnt Umber to paint on the twig arms. Rinse brush.

    85. Use the #1 liner brush and Carbon Black to add rope to connect the poles; the hat on the snowman; coals on his face; and buttons on the snowman.

    87. Unflip the top flap on the stocking and put more wax paper under the flap to protect the sky. Use the #10 flat brush with Cadmium Red Hue to fill in the entire flap. Rinse brush.

    89. Use the 6"x 8" Americana Inspiration Stencil to add words of choice. Load three cosmetic sponges separately with Cobalt Teal Hue, Cadmium Red Hue, and Blue Green Light to stencil on words.

    91. Use another smaller round household item to make a circle on the flap for the monogram. Use the #10 flat brush and Titan Buff to fill in the circle. Rinse brush.

    93. Pick a font of your choice online. Use it as a pattern, with the pencil or pen and the tracing and transfer papers, to trace and transfer a letter of choice in the middle of the circle. Use the #1 round brush and Cobalt Teal Hue to paint on the letter.

    95. Use the same brush (unwashed) to mix (3) parts Titanium White with a very small amount of Blue Green Light. Use the mix to add polka dots around the letter. Rinse brush. Use the same brush with Blue Green Light to outline the Titan Buff circle and then add a scalloped border around the circle. Rinse brush.
    96. Use a ruler to draw on stripes all over the flap, avoiding the letter. Use the #1 liner brush and Primary Cyan to paint on the stripes. Rinse brush.
